Both crawler and mobile cranes can lift very heavy loads, but they mobilise and work very differently. The right choice can save a large share of the lifting budget.
Mobile cranes
- Small and mid-size units drive to site on public roads.
- Rigged in hours; ideal for one-day or few-day lifts.
- Need room for outriggers and usually do not travel with a load.
Crawler cranes
- Tracks spread ground pressure, giving stability for heavy loads.
- Can pick and carry within the load chart.
- Transported in pieces on several trailers and assembled on site, so they pay off on longer projects.
Quick guide
| Situation | Best fit |
|---|---|
| A few machine lifts over 1–3 days | Mobile crane |
| Months of steel-structure erection | Crawler crane |
| Wind farms, bridges, refineries: heavy and high | Crawler crane, often with a mobile assist crane |
| Many scattered locations | Mobile crane |
On projects such as Nghi Son Refinery and Phong Huy wind farm, Binh Tien combined both: crawler cranes as main lifters and mobile cranes to assemble them, assist and tail loads.
